Because the light deserves tending , just like your heart.
Candles bring warmth, beauty, and a sense of peace to our spaces. But to get the most from them — a steady flame, a long burn, and a smoke-free glow — a little care goes a long way. Here are five simple ways to tend to your candle, and in doing so, create a rhythm of quiet, thoughtful care in your day.
1. Trim the wick before each burn
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 5 mm (¼ inch). This helps the flame stay even and clean, and prevents that mushroom-like tip that can cause smoke.
“He will not snuff out a smoldering wick.” — Isaiah 42:3
Even the smallest flame is worth protecting.
2. Let the wax melt to the edges
Allow your candle to burn until the entire top layer of wax is melted. This prevents tunneling and ensures your candle burns evenly and lasts longer.
Let it be a reminder: don’t rush what needs time. Some things like peace and prayer need space to unfold.
3. Don’t burn for too long
It’s best to burn your candle for 2–4 hours at a time. Burning too long can overheat the wax or cause soot. Your candle , like your soul needs balance between glow and rest.
4. Use a snuffer to extinguish the flame
Blowing out your candle can cause smoke and disturb the wick. A wick snuffer gently protects both the flame and the wax — with care and intention.
Use your hands and your heart to protect what God has lit in you.
5. Store it with love
Keep your candle away from direct sunlight and dust. Cover it when not in use to preserve the fragrance and keep the wax clean. What we cherish, we care for — even in stillness.
A candle is more than fragrance. It’s a light in the dark.
And like the light God places in us, it shines brightest when it’s well cared for.
“Let your light shine before others.” — Matthew 5:16
